چکیده

I. Introduction: Challenges in energy savings for turbines engines Nickel-based superalloys can withstand high temperatures and severe oxidizing conditions, while maintaining superb mechanical properties. Because of this, they are widely used for aerospace and power generation applications. Since higher operating temperature leads to greater cycle efficiency, there are economic and environmental incentives to develop engines that can produce higher power output with lower fuel consumption. Although jet turbine blades are protected with thermal barrier coatings, adverse effects such as oxide-layer spallation makes it necessary to study the effects of trace elements on the oxidatized layers.

Effect of Crystal Orientation on Fatigue Failure of Single Crystal Nickel Base Turbine Blade Superalloys

High cycle fatigue (HCF) induced failures in aircraft gas turbine and rocket engine turbopump blades is a pervasive problem. Single crystal nickel turbine blades are being utilized in rocket engine turbopumps and jet engines throughout industry because of their superior creep, stress rupture, melt resistance, and thermomechanical fatigue capabilities over polycrystalline alloys. Currently the m...

Probing the Crystallography of Ordered Phases by coupling Orientation Microscopy and Atom Probe Tomography

Superalloys are a class of materials that possess stable microstructures at elevated temperatures due to the presence of coherent L12 ordered γ’ precipitates spatially aligned along elastically soft directions in a face centered cubic (FCC) γ matrix [1]. Nickel-base superalloys are used in a variety of applications such as in turbine blades of aircraft engines and land-based turbine engine [1]....

Determination of solution temperature in an ex-service Ni-based turbine blade

It is well-known that the harsh operational conditions of turbine blades lead to a gradual change in the microstructure of underlying Ni-based superalloy of blades. According to this, a rejuvenation process should be conducted on turbine blades superalloys to recover their microstructures. The first and main step of rejuvenation process is the determination of appropriate solution condition in ...

Single Crystal Turbine Blade Inspection Using a 2d Ultrasonic Array

In this paper a non-destructive method for inspecting jet-engine turbine blades for root cracking is developed. This method utilises 2D ultrasonic arrays to enable the detection and characterisation of sub-surface cracks in three-dimensions. The majority of modern turbine blades are manufactured from single crystals of nickel based superalloys which exhibit high elastic anisotropy. This complic...
